A Message For Motorists Everywhere

Dear Drivers,

As you may recall from Bike Safety in grade three, when I am on my bike I AM A VEHICLE. This means that I follow the rules of the road just like any other vehicle. It is very hard for me to do this when you won't let me. For example, if I have a stop sign and you don't, please don't stop to let me cross the street. You are not doing me a favour, or doing the right thing. What you are doing is teaching your children bad cycling habits and slowing the flow of traffic. I have tried and tried to get you to stop doing this, but from now on I will not try anymore. When you let me cross the street I will go. Not because you are so nice and I would never have made it across if you hadn't stopped. Not because it is my turn to go. Only because if I try to wave YOU to go we will end up waving at each other for five minutes until I finally go anyway because I can't get you to (even though, as previously stated, you have the right of way). I will still shake my head at you, even if it turns out you are someone I know (which may have happened today.) I just thought you would like to know.

Sincerely,

erin k

People have the same problem taking their right of way in cars too. I can't understand it.

Although I see a lot of bikers not following road rules too.]

How confusing!

I would add a letter to cyclists: crosswalks with flashing lights are not intended to be ridden across on your bike! If you're not walking, I'm not obligated to stop my car for you. It's a crosswalk, NOT a crossBIKE. We'll be teaching our little cycler to get off his bike and walk it at crosswalks (I hope).
So watch out, crossbikers! Think twice before pressing that button and wheeling out in front of my purring diesel...

Biking - ack! I live in FEAR of encountering cyclists on our narrow northern roads ESPECIALLY when they don't pull over for traffic.
I know someone who was in a serious car accident when the other driver at a four way stop thought they'd be polite and motioned them ahead.

If you ever want to re-learn knitting, you could try www.knittinghelp.com. That's actually where I taught myself to knit. They have step by step videos.

Just in case you get inspired one day to try again! :)

Seriously. That is bad here too. You would think it would be a strictly Canadian phenomenon - trying to be polite by letting the other person go first - but no. It's as if most of the world decided to ignore the lesson about right of way.

I AM however, chuckling whilst envisioning you waiting to cross and having a waveathon with other drivers....can't say your community isn't friendly!
