I have a confession to make

I listened to some Christmas music on the weekend.

In my defense, I was making my Christmas Pudding at the time. Okay, and I also listened to some while working on the first of the home-made gifts we will be giving this year. But now the Christmas music is back on the shelf, where it belongs, waiting until the appropriate time to be brought out again. The appropriate time, in case you were wondering, is December 1st. It is the first day of the month of Christmas and usually quite close to the First Sunday of Advent (if not the actual day.) It also happens to be my birthday.

When I was younger I used to badger my parents to please let us put up the Christmas tree on my birthday. As an adult I can see that this was actually not a good idea, and they weren't just being mean. We usually put our tree up around the middle of the month, still earlier than my folks do it. I have always thought the idea of trimming the tree on Christmas Eve was rather romantic, but then you miss those two weeks or so of Tree-enjoyment.

So I will repress my urge to start the Christmas-ing now, so that I can truly enjoy it later. Even though my evenings will be spent at the sewing machine. And even though the cold and snow could be arriving any day. I will wait.

We forgive you, Erin:) And I agree about the music. Can we at least get through T-giving? We have a local soft rock radio station that used to start playing it the day after Turkey day which was bad enough. But I guess some people can't wait and LAST year, the xmas music was on The monday of Tgiving!

Christmas season has always started for me the day after Thanksgiving and that's when I allow Christmas music. My only exception to this, is if you are doing something Christmas-y (like making pudding I would guess) that you can have a brief interlude to get you in the mood. When I worked for a ministry we started our Christmas adoption program very early and so sometimes you would catch me listening to the music in October just to keep me in the spirit of what I was doing.

By the way, my meme is finally up. I am sure you will be underwhelmed by my musical tastes. :)

I have some VERY EARLY in the season Christmas music that I permit myself to listen to now - Anonymous 4, Loreena McKennit's gloomy Christmas album, the Charlie Brown Chirstmas soundtrack - things that are only Christmasy if you really LISTEN.

Beck - It actually was Loreena McKennit while making the pudding. And Snow Angels by Over the Rhine while sewing...

*GASP* I just got a new Christmas CD in the mail and have 'very strict' instructions from the Husband that it is not to go near the CD player until precisely the day after Thanksgiving.

This year we won't have a Christmas tree since we'll be Home in MB. I agree that to enable maximum enjoyment, the tree should be put up as early as possible - we've always put it up the first Sunday in Dec.

And may I say I think you're extra lucky this year because your birthday is on a Saturday! The best day of the week for a celebration, in my humble estimation. Happy Birthday early!

Erin, that is my "thin" angle. I will only allow pictures to be taken of me at that angle. My children will think I had some odd neck ailment, years later.

We've listened to some here too....

Wintersong by Sarah McLachlan. That's kind of wintery with just a little Christmas thrown in.

However, there's a radio station here that's been playing Christmas music since OCT. 1ST!!!!

Here is the evil of the giant family "Christmas" gathering the first weekend of November. Since it was a special occasion, I pulled out our new Hi-5 Christmas CD to play in the car on the way there ... and now I am NOT allowed to listen to anything else in the car. By the time Christmas comes, I'm going to be poking myself in the eye with a sharp stick anytime I hear the fab five break into their techno-pop rendition of "Twas the Night! Before Christmas..."
